How to remove a PDF password, end to end.

Three clicks from a dropzone on this page to an unlocked PDF in your Downloads folder. You never leave the tab.

  1. Drop your PDF on this page.

Drag it from your desktop or click to browse. It uploads encrypted. We can't see it.
  2. Enter the password.

Type the password you already have. We need it to open your file — without it, there's nothing we can do.
  3. Download. We forget.

Your unlocked PDF lands in Downloads. Our copy — and the password you typed — is deleted within the hour.

What you can actually do on this page.

Four honest unlock moves you can finish in the browser you're already in. No Adobe, no signup, no trying to crack a file you don't own.

  • Strip the open password.

Type the password once, and we hand back a copy of your PDF with the lock gone. The file opens in any reader without asking again.

  • Clear print or copy restrictions too.

If your PDF also blocks printing, copying, or editing, those permissions come off with the same unlock step. You get a copy you can actually use.

  • Never a watermark.

Free means free. No stamp on the unlocked file, no diagonal "sample," no gotcha at download.

  • Keep going without re-uploading.

Once your PDF is unlocked, you can move straight into edit, sign, merge, or compress without starting over. The file stays loaded.

Why people choose Pdf Clarity

Your PDFs are transferred over TLS and deleted within one hour. We don't look at them, and you don't need an account.

  • Fast and free

Editing, annotating, signing, merging and splitting are free with no signup. Your first upload opens the editor in seconds.

  • Works in any browser

Open the editor in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge on Mac, Windows, Linux or Chromebook. You never install anything.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what people ask us most about editing a PDF online for free. Tap any question and the answer expands inline.

Do I need the password, or can you unlock it without one?
You need the password. We only unlock PDFs you own. If you don't have the password, we can't help — and we won't. This tool exists for people who set a password on their own file and need to remove it, not for people trying to open someone else's file.
Is it legal to remove a password from a PDF?
Yes — when it's your file and you know the password. That's what this page does. Removing a password from a file you don't own or have permission to open is a different question, and this tool doesn't do that.
How do you know I own the file?
We don't — and that's on purpose. We require you to type the password you already have. If you can type it, the file already opens for you, and we just hand back a copy without the lock. If you can't, nothing happens.
What if I forgot the password?
We can't recover it. The password never touches our servers in a form we could read back. Check your password manager, your email for the original share, or the person who sent you the file.
Will the unlocked PDF have a watermark?
Never. Not on free, not on Pro, not ever.
Is it really free? What's the catch?
There isn't one. Unlocking, editing, merging, signing — all free, for as long as you need them. No signup, no watermark, no trial timer.
How big a PDF can I unlock?
Up to 100 MB on the free plan. If you need bigger — a long scan, a thick contract — the Pro tier handles up to 500 MB.
What happens to my file and password after I'm done?
Both are deleted within one hour of upload. Encrypted in transit and at rest. Never read by a human, never shared, never used to train anything. The password is never stored in a form we could replay.
Does it work on an iPad, Chromebook, or phone?
Yes. Any browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge. Upload, type the password, download. Same flow on every device.
